From sweet and smooth classics, to new names, to old names with new music...the focus here, is to shine a little light on some damn fine music.

I'll find it. You can listen, review, or tell me I wouldn't know good music if it kicked me in the ass. I personally don't give a shit.

Better Dig Two, Better Than One...Right?

For those who haven't read Kat's Theory of Life, a quick catch up. Family matters have crept into my brain, my sanity and my time. Spending a lot of time with a family member in the hospital has left we with not a lot of writing time. My apologies for not posting some new or old fascinating music, along with some information about it. Hopefully next week I can get back to a little more normalcy. But just to throw out a little something, and it is definitely something new, I give you another installment of Lance's 100-Word Song Challenge. 100 Words is about my energy limit today.

Today we have a selection from Deana, wife of Sir Lance. He said she wanted to pick the song and because she's a good kisser, he let her have her way. I think there might have been a little more of having their way with each other...but that's a story for another day.

Deana picked a country song... not usually my strong suit, but it is actually a band I have heard about. A brothers/sister trio from Tennessee, originally from Mississippi. They have won Grammys and have been nominated or won virtually every country music award.

The song is a wicked song of everlasting love...or obsession. The name is "Better Dig Two."

My 100 Word interpretation...

Four men waited beneath the surface while the thirty above pondered their options.

Only a partial collapse, but the extent of damage was unknown. Henry had seen worse in terms of volume, but the wild card was always the air. Was it breathable, was there enough to sustain the three workmen and the OSHA inspector who picked a real bad day to visit.

“Henry, the cave-in’s midline, they could be at either end of the tunnel. What do we do?”

The engineer knew time was the enemy. “Can’t chance it. Bring in the second drill. Tonight, we better dig two.”

When the Water Gets Muddy, It's Time for Some Blues

It's been a long, cold week. Dear lord, I am in need of some serious blues. Serious blues.

McKinley Morganfield died April 30, 1983 at approximately 70 years of age. His date of birth has long been in question but his impact on the American blues scene has not. He has been ranked as one of the top 100 musicians of all time, and influenced virtually every American and British rock or blues group from the 60's. Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix, the Stones.. Hendrix is quoted as saying about him "I first heard him as a little boy and it scared me to death." The Rolling Stones got their name from one of his songs.

The king of Chicago Blues, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Hell, they even issued a postage stamp in his honor.

Still can't place the name? How about what his friends called him: Muddy Waters.

Let's just taste a few of his best tunes. They are bound to warm you from the inside out.

Mr. Muddy Waters

"Hoochie Coochie Man"
"Got My Mojo Working"
"Baby Please Don't Go"
"They Call Me Muddy Waters"

ah yes.
I know I'm feeling much, much better.

Lucinda Williams: Can't Go Back

Today I need to get back to basics.

Featured today is an artist who can play it all. A little blues, a little country, a little rock. Lucinda Williams started out more country oriented in the late 70's. Over the years her influences have moved her into much broader categories.

Coming out of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Lucinda has traveled the road from singer-songwriter, to Grammy winning singer-songwriter, to being named "America's Best Songwriter," by Time magazine. In 2007 She performed a 5 day series of concerts in Los Angeles and New York where she performed her entire catalog on consecutive nights. Haven't you always wanted to hear an artist do that... play all the songs you love, but are not necessarily the ones which make the regular set list.

Her latest album, Blessed, was released in 2011 and is her tenth studio album. It features guest appearances by Elvis Costello and Matthew Sweet.

Today we will have a taste of a song from her 1998 Grammy winning album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, her first Gold album. The song was written by Randy Weeks of Lonesome Strangers.

A Little Traveling Music Please

In a good mood this morning. Temperature is supposed to hit 70 here in the NY tri-state area. I'll take that any day of the year, on March 8...it's positively magnificent.

The taste today is someone I consider a very underrated singer-songwriter. Sure she's won four Grammy awards and has sold millions of albums, but except for a splash here and there..she's done it quietly.

Tracy Chapman burst onto the scene with a song called "Fast Car." Anyone who ever thought of walking out on a bad situation could identify with the storyline. Her vocal conveyed the desperation, hope and resignation.

With a wonderful quality and clarity in her voice, she is as smooth as a milk shake on a hot day. Take the time to drink it in.

"You're The One" so smooth
"Give Me One Reason"  with Eric Clapton...worth a taste right there

and the list would not be complete without...
"Fast Car"

It's a beautiful day, take a ride...with the top down of course.
